Don’t tell anyone, I’m in love with you
I’ve been following you around for years
I was the one who whose breath you felt
Panting behind your ears
But you can’t find out, because it’s a secret
You are not supposed to know
Those notes I signed anonymous
They’re from me you know
The heavy breathing on the phone line
It was me I say
But don’t believe the rumours
Because I love you, I do not play
My love for you is secret
Thats why I’m telling you
Because if it was to be revealed
I don’t know what I’d do
Those flowers that arrived today
I sent them to you myself
I stole a few of your pictures
To hang upon the shelf
But please you must keep it hush hush
I don’t want it getting around
Just letting you know I’m stalking you
My secret love for you is no longer underground
I stare at you if you didn’t notice
I watch you all the day
(and night too) with binoculars
I observe at work and play
But you can’t find out
This is a secret I can’t share
Just to keep you abreast with it
I’ve got some of your underwear
So why then are the police outside
What do they want with me?
I haven’t been thinking aloud again have I?
If looks reveal it, they can see
My love for you is secret
So I posted it all over the wall
Sometimes you can’t control this feeling
But quite secretly in love with you I fall
- Thirteen reasons
The train began to slow down. As the station loomed forward, he could hear the announcement over the microphone. Finally, the train stopped at the station. He began to gather his luggage which consisted of a suitcase, a bag and a backpack. As he disembarked from the train onto the platform, he’s filled with nostalgia and sadness. From the doorway she handed over his suitcase and his bag.
It’s mid-summer, with simmering sun showing not the least of clemency. They found an unoccupied bench, where they sat abreast. She looked extremely beautiful, a seraph bound for the heavens above. They sat there for an eternity, gazing into each others eyes, not able to break the lingering silence. They had lots to say, yet they chose to remain silent.
After a while, he decided to put an end to the misery, “so, do mail me,” that’s all he could say, the lump in his throat getting bigger with each cantering miserable moments. She said nothing, nodded her head twice, her eyes brimming with sincere tears, however she shed not a single tear; the flood-gate at an ace of breaking down, yet it stood firm and resolute.
“Hey! You want to drink Lassi (cold milk-shake), he asked; she said nothing, just nodded. He got up, went over to a nearby stall and got two Lassi bottles. As he began to sip his Lassi, he noticed that her Lassi lay idle.
You need my help? He asked.
What? She looked confused.
I mean your Lassi,” he reminded.
Oh! She smiled, her conspicuous dimple emanating all those wonderful moments that he shared with her.
“Let’s share this,” she said with a twinkle in her eyes, OK! You first, I’ll finish up,” he acceded.
“No, not like that, we’ll share from the same bottle at the same time,” she said mischievously.
“You are serious!” He asked, rather alarmed than astounded. Yap! She confirmed solicitously, a glint of amusement and alacrity flashed in her ever graceful eyes.
He fished his straw into the bottle, and they began to sip the Lassi together. They exemplified a juvenile courtship and bliss. The by-stander awe-struck by the unusual scene; some with their mouth wide-open, some guffawed, some merely smiled as they went by.
However, to them nothing else mattered. They had never felt so close to each other, their vibes entwined, and their breaths synchronizing slowly. Two hearts which began to beat with one frequency and wavelength. They’re two bodies, embodied within a single soul.
“Nothing last forever,” the bottle of Lassi finally drained of its last molecule brought them back to the draconian reality; the end of the blissful tryst.
“So, you want to say anything,” he asked.
Nothing, you want to say something,” she asked. He shook his head. Though, he had lots to say, he could not find himself to say anything, the burgeoning lump in his throat aloof to his sentiments.
As they looked upon each other, wondering what to say, filled with unfathomable sadness, the train blew its whistle, announcing its departure, after a respite of twenty minutes.
The train began to move. He hugged her for the last time, kissed her on the forehead and said, “I am going to miss you.”
“I am going to miss you, too. She said, nearly a whisper.
Hey! You might miss your train, and you might have to stay with me forever,” he reminded with a worried expression, as the train began to canter forward.
I wish, I could,” she said, hardly audible amidst tears, which finally seems to have broken free.
She kissed him on the cheek, caught up with the running train and got on-board. As the train began to gather pace and speed, he could see her poignant figure on the doorway, waving the final adieu.
Long after the train disappeared into the distant horizon; he’s still rooted to the same spot, transfixed, filled with sadness. With a heavy heart, he reminded himself to mend his poise, and took out a letter he’d written a day ago.
It read!
My lady!
Those four years at college were wonderful; however meeting you was one of the most memorable moments of my life.
I’ve no clue as to when I fall in love with you. I’ve had come to your doorsteps a thousand times to reveal my feelings to you, just to be averted the last moment, fearing a fatal repercussion.
We had a casual affair, in fact a wonderful friendship; once in awhile we flirted with each other. All those wonderful moments with you, I’ll cherish them forever.
I never really had the courage to tell you that I loved you. The relation had nowhere to go, after our degree, we’re to part ways. We being from different social background, different countries, though we had a lot in common; however we had lots to resolve and sacrifice. The differences were staggering, and we can’t solely survive on love; today or tomorrow, one fine day we’re bound to question our love.
The one reason which resolved me not to divulge my feelings was my fears. I’s scared that I might land up breaking your heart. I might make some thousand promises, yet not be able to fulfill a single one.
Anyway, you’re one such fine, beautiful human being, you would find that someone, who would love you more than me. I hope, you’re able to comprehend my dilemma and decision, and I hope you’d forgive the spiritless coward, me.
I wish you a wonderful life ahead, and pray that you would be mine, in the next life.
‘I can’t undo the past, but I help keep some memories intact’, you’ll always remain in my heart.
Yours………… “
He read the letter twice; unable to believe that she’s no longer with him. With a sigh, he took out a pen and scribbled his final valediction…..
P.S… I am extremely sorry, I really wanted you to know how I felt about you, however it would have done us no good. So, I decided not to reveal my feelings to you.
Sometimes things are better left, unsaid! I hope, you do understand and do forgive me, in times to come …
He tore the letter to pieces, and flung them over the railway tracks. As the pieces began to flutter over the tracks, it’s the end of the secret love, left untold.
